“The time has come for Edo central senatorial district to deservedly occupy the position of the Deputy Governor of Edo State in the next dispensation” – Esan Consultative Forum
It is on record that patriots from Edo central played significant roles in pre and post independent Nigeria. A number of them occupy places of honour whenever the history of Nigeria, our great country, is told. By the same token, the pivotal contributions history attributes to them with regards to the Socio-economic and development of Edo state, from when it was Midwest region and Bendel state cannot be over emphasized. Sadly however, the zone has suffered a major political blip since Edo was carved out of Bendel in 1991. Even as one of the tripods on which the state stands, it has neither produced a governor nor deputy governor.
Unambiguously, with the Chief Odigie Oyegun and Rev Peter Obada (south/north), Lucky Igbinedion and Mike Ogiadomhen (south/north) and the present Aliyu Adams Oshiomhole/Egbranmwen Odubu, (north/south) tickets recorded by history, it needs not be over emphasized that the zone has suffered the indignity of being a disregarded and disparaged part of the trinity. It goes without saying therefore that as the state moves into another phase in the annals of democratic governance, all stakeholders, in the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC, a party that thrives on equity, justice and fair play, must endeavour to recognize the fact that the time has come to right the wrong. There are numerous reasons why the time to correct the mistake must be now.
Significantly, Esan people played a loyal part of the seven and a half years of the current Oshiomhole administration. The reason is not far to seek. Emphatically too, they spoke with one voice when the time came for them to play their part in not only marketing Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki, the party’s choice for September governorship election to delegates, they also helped in delivering his victory in the recently concluded party primaries. Assuredly, they did what they had to do as one of the equal partaker in the make-up of the state. It is therefore not only fair and just that they are accorded the right to have and feel a sense of belonging, they also deserve the respect of other zones in the question for what belongs to them by right. It is their turn to occupy the deputy governor’s position. It is not a favour.
Esan people are of the believe that beyond having a party that is reputed for equity, fair play and justice, the state is equally administered by a man with no less a pedigree. As an apostle of justice, Esan people are assured that the Comrade Governor is not about to rubbish the reputation he struggled honourably to build over the years. That is why on assumption of office, the people trusted his sense of judgement, followed him all the while and capped their loyalty by helping to deliver the symbol of the party in September’s governorship election. They did that in order that the administration development mandate which he initiated and pursued with an uncommon singleness of mind will not flounder.
Esan people hold tenaciously to the view that in response to their unalloyed loyalty and patriotic spirit, particularly taking into consideration the participatory anomaly suffered so far by being alienated from the state’s leadership role, our Comrade Governor will not but do that which is just, fair and deserving for them. They expect him to do what is just, right and fair in the sight of God and man by making sure that he is counted among their trust-worthy friends. This he can prove by considering them as sufficiently qualified to occupy the deputy governor position without delay. Indeed, Esan people are convinced that he is aware that the time has come for Edo central senatorial district to deservedly occupy the position in the next dispensation.
While appealing to both the APC leadership and the Comrade Governor to follow the path of justice, equity and fair play with a view to delivering the deputy governor slot to Edo central, Esan people equally recognize the need to reach out to our brothers and sisters in other senatorial districts, particularly the north. It is on record that Esan stood by and supported their son who is equally our in-law in the last seven years. It is only fair that they tow the path of honour by supporting Esan people now in the quest to occupy a position that is due them.
Right now, Esan people not only deserve to occupy the deputy governor’s position, they equally deserve the support of all fair minded individuals and groups from the other two senatorial districts, especially our brothers and sisters from Edo north.
We urge every Esan sons and daughters to shun rumours currently making the rounds. One of them is that the deputy governorship slot has been zoned to Edo north. We assure that the rumours are unfounded because it is selfish and unfair for groups or individuals to create the impression that one particular zone can step down from the number position and immediately aspire to step into number two whereas one has never occupied either of the two positions since the creation of Edo state in August, 1991. While we recognize the frustration arising from years of marginalization, particularly from the displeasure of sitting under trees at Dennis Osadebey Avenue, we want to assure everyone that the rumours cannot be true, it is counter productive to the APC, a party that stands for equity, fair play and justice.
Indeed, Esan people have no reason to believe the rumour because our Comrade Governor, Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole, will not betray the trust in him as Adolor of Esanland by lending himself to any form of injustice against them. Certainly, he will not want to be counted among those who seek to disenfranchise them. Esan Consultative Forum have confidence in the APC leadership to do the rightful thing.
