IBRAHIM MOMODU:THE RESILIENCE OF THE CIVIL SOCIETY:
Ibrahim Momodu until his death was a student of the University of Benin, a 400 level student of the Department of Science Laboratory Technology with Matriculation number (LSC0807159).
He was shot by Corporal Amadin Idahosa at the instruction of the Divisional Police Officer of Ogida Police station, CSP Carol Afegbai on the 27th of May, 2013 on a team patrol.
She reported that, Ibrahim Momodu was accosted on a motorbike with her team on a police patrol routine where they searched him and found a cut to size gun, afterwards shot his legs and took him to the station where he died. He was taken to the 2nd Cemetery for burial without informing his family.
The Civil Society in Edo state and other spirited Nigerians took up the matter with Barrister Jefferson Uwoghiren to ensure that justice is achieved.
Today, A High Court sitting in Benin finally convicted and sentenced to Life Imprisonment a Police Officer, Cpl. Amadin Idahosa for the unlawful and extra -judicial killing of Ibrahim Momodu.
It is important to say that, Edo state civil society remains the most vibrant and serious minded civil movement in Nigeria, the issue of extra judicial killing by trigger-happy police officers has been stopped in Edo state by virtue of the determination of the civil society to stamp it out.
Our resilience in any matter has always given us victory, such case is that of the removal of the electricity fixed charge that we started in 2014, as at the time we started the agitation for the removal, many never believed in us but today, it has been abolished. The Land Use Charge also will be abandoned in due course.
All comrades, citizens, press, the lawyer and the family that fought for justice must be commended because the justice for Ibrahim Momodu’s soul is the the victory for all Nigerians.
